During this trip in NYC, we visited a lot of great places of landscape areas, the places within the city, or even within a building; the places near Manhattan and some places far away from the middle of the city. Because of the occupation of people and the density of high-rise buildings, the type and form of the landscape are designed in a very different way. For people, sometimes the landscape could be like a fake scenario that becomes as the ornament of the building, such as the roof in MOMA. However, the birds are finding the real natural landscape for them to survive in this busy city.
In this case, I decided my theme to be following the sounds of the bird that reflect the different conditions of the landscapes that located in New York from near to far.
My film is presenting the landscapes in 3 different stages: in the city, near the city, and far from the city (or the left over space).
First, the space in Manhattan is very limited. The landscapes built in the city are all trying to develop an invisible boundary, which separates the crowded perspective of the city and the car flows from the nature. As the ground is not actual ground and the landscape is made-up by people, which looks great for the people, but still has been effected a lot by the busy environment. So the sound of birds is faint.
Second, the spaces in Brooklyn and Queen are not as crowd as Manhattan, and some natural environments are preserved from the development of city. In those places, the landscapes are really bring people a peaceful and relaxing environment. And the sound of birds is very strong in here.
Third, some left over spaces barely has any sound of the birds, just like the sewage disposal area. Although these areas have planted trees and even built up some resting areas as the landscape for people as well, the environmental remediation is still a problem. The natural instinct of birds is leading them not choosing here as an appropriate living place.
At last, as this space is kept as the way it is and not been developed, the view of the ocean is really an enjoyment.
