When I first read the assignment for today's visual technique, the "pan shot," I immediately thought of a panoramic photo. I later realized this meant a pan in video form, but I couldn't resist taking some panoramic shots throughout the day. The places that Sarah and I visited lent themselves well to this technique.
Today was a long day, but it was probably one of my favorite days. Despite the fact that we had to get up at 4 AM to make our long commute to Staten Island, we still managed to have a lot of fun. It could be due to the fantastic weather, or maybe the fact that we spent our morning outside planting trees, but I really think it is because we were able to pretty much make our own schedule today and move at our own pace. I feel like I was able to really absorb and experience the places that I was in, and I didn't have to worry about quickly moving on to the next location.
Taking the ferry this morning and getting outside to do some manual labor was actually enjoyable. It was definitely a departure from the fast-paced walking and sightseeing that we've been doing up until today. I've planted trees before, but the experience today was very different. There were a LOT of trees.... so many, in fact, that it was too many for the 300 people that volunteered to come out today. MillionTreesNYC did a great job organizing the event, but they need all the help they can get. I would love to see what these trees look like in a few years.
It seems like the rescheduled bike ride was a lot of fun today, but Sarah and I had already made plans back in Manhattan. After our volunteering activity, we took a trip to the West Village. The feeling was totally different than what I had experienced so far in the city. This area is full of restaurants and small shops, and on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, it was bustling. All of the cafes were open and the tourists were in town. After being in the city all week, I almost felt like a native New Yorker! We had made plans to visit a friend of mine who works at her family's bakery, and so we were able to see her and enjoy the best cannoli in the city. Check out Pasticceria Rocco; everything is delicious!
Today was the day that I finally went in to Central Park. I've always been around the perimeter of the park - more times than I can count - but I've never been inside. I couldn't have asked for a better day to have this experience! Watching the sailboats on the Conservatory Pond was one of the most restful moments I have had this entire week, and it made for some great photos. Luckily the Metropolitan Museum was close by, so we spent the rest of the afternoon absorbed in beautiful art. It was Sarah's first time at the Met, and I think we are both glad that we're going back tomorrow because it is impossible to see everything you want to in one visit. (Although I'd be perfectly content sitting in front of the Impressionist paintings all day).
Our pan shots for the day are from the Met. Since it was a Saturday, most of our afternoon was spent in the hustle and bustle. I think this shot gives a great view of the beautiful architecture and lighting of the museum, but also a snapshot of the people. It is really intriguing to take just a moment to stop and watch how people move through a space. It seems really random, but it is very orchestrated. I look forward to tomorrow's return visit because even though the exhibits and atmosphere remain the same, it will be a completely different experience.
