I have always had a fascination for sculpture, maybe because it is an art form that is still beyond my comprehension. The complexity and subtly of form is captivating, and I still can’t quite wrap my head around how sculptors do it, which is why its so wonderful. There’s nothing like a mystery to get the mind working, and I prefer art that challenges and engages me as the viewer. So, today’s activities were perfect in that respect. I have been to Dia:Beacon and Storm King Art Center many times, but they won’t ever loose their magic for me. Storm King in particular is always a surreal experience. The sculptures are on such a large scale, and seeing them scattered throughout in the landscape is like nothing else. This trip was a little bit different from all my others too because it was a cloudy day, and it had just rained. It gave the park a whole new feeling. The rain almost seemed to intensify all the colors and the mist on the mountains gave the park a mysterious feeling. The rain wasn’t all good though. There were signs up around Maya Lin’s wavefield asking people not to walk on it. I guess they were afraid all the rain had made the ground muddy and they wanted to conserve the form, which is understandable, but having come to see her work in particular, it was frustrating. That being said, there might have been a few rules broken on our part…
