Day two of this seven-day trip along New York’s modern landscapes led us down the Manhattan Western Waterfront. Starting from the southwest corner of 72nd street and Broadway and working our way down till the end of the island itself in downtown, I came across a thought. Along side all the nicely designed parks and sceneries, there was always something in my vision of sight. This building forced itself in front of me, its boldness being no distraction from the parks themselves. The building I am talking about is the Freedom Tower. Within our travels along side the river, the Freedom Tower stood in the distance as a reminder of where we should end up, and a beacon of hope and inspiration. Following the 9/11 attacks, the reconstruction of this area, and the building itself stands to be a representation of hope, strength, and of course freedom.
It is for this reason why I decided to create a photo transect of our journey starting from roughly Pier 45 all the way down until we reached the 9/11 memorial. As you look at the photo transect, you will notice only 8 photographs. Unfortunately, I had many more pictures taken in intervals of roughly 2-4 minutes, but I do not have the correct software that will allow me to do so. I could only efficiently add 8 pictures, but I still believe this grabs the essence of what I was trying to represent. As you look at the transect you will also notice the parks we passed along the way to reach the tower, giving this strip of photographs a nice flow. Since I had to cut out many pictures, I am not sure of the time spacing or distribution of photographs taken. If you look at the transect itself, you can tell that the city and its parks along side the western part of the island, are designed to showcase the downtown area. With this new high rise in place, it seems to grab to viewers attention. Each park alongside the waterfront has specific attributes to it designed to separate you from the city and hustle and bustle of the cars. Ironically, each park has this perfect view of the Freedom Tower and the downtown district. The walkway from Pier 45 all the way down the strip essentially puts the Tower dead center, which seems to be no mistake in the architects decision. As you get closer and closer to the downtown district, this of course becomes much clearer to see. Some say the Freedom Tower is to overpowering over the remaining older buildings in its district. Whatever the case may be, this structure is simply an architectural beauty personally speaking.
Once we reached our last stop, which was the 9/11 memorial, I was in complete shock. I had decided to do this photo transect of the Freedom Tower, not knowing that the memorial would be so impressive and robust. Once you enter the location you can feel the power it holds. The two water falls created in place of the towers were not only architecturally beautiful, but also memorable and symbolic of the lost lives. The memorial in all stands to be thee best location visited today for me personally.
