Sunshine, Water, Air

Very happy in the first day of 7-days course, Through the whole day walking, let me have a perfect experience about the public space design in the New York City, As we know NYC is the most congested and busiest city of the world. Basic on this background and history of New York City, the people need more and more sunshine, water and air, this is the public space. Today, we have a very good view to see and think about this problem.

In the modern city and society, especially New York City, public space can break the busy pace of life, bring more and more touch between human and nature, it is very important, for architecture and landscape design, In this space, people can forgot their annoyance and work, they can enjoy the beautiful and free space in 24 hours. The public space is the free space of New York City, such as Bryan Park and High Line Park, In the Bryant park, I find different people can do different things, for example, sun-bath, yoga, free chat and drinking, They are very relax and free. The High Line Park run through the Manhattan, people can walk on High Line Park in every street and anytime, it is very interesting.

In the tall buildings of Manhattan, people working and living in the closed boxes of concrete, lacking of the nature space, so these public space and parks can remedy the problem.

My photo grid want to express the public space in interior and exterior space, in different part of the city provide the different size nature space to people, maybe in the central of skyscrapers, maybe nearby the river, maybe have the terrace, these are different landscape feeling for human and generate the different the different view to the New York City. Therefore, my logic is different artificial landscape for different public space.

These designers use different elements to express their idea and attitude on urban public space, such as the high level canopy of trees, slow terraces and large size grassland. In these park and public spaces, marble, wood and steel are using in different way, to provide the various feeling for five senses of human, at the same time, these park combine with their site perfectly.

I hope I can have more experience about the urban and landscape in New York City in the next few days.

hi jun,

i definitely recognize in your grid many of the sites we visited yesterday, but i'm not sure why they appear in this particular order, or why certain sites appear once while others appear more often? your written narrative is helpful and insightful, but doesn't tell us much about why you decided to set up the grid in the way you did
