Jinsung Kim - Soundscape in Landscape

This video show how the dealing with sounds in urban landscape is important. This video is composed with waterfront parks and urban water public spaces that have the juxtaposition of two different sounds in same place. Water is one of the vital elements in landscape design and it creates places for various recreations and activities. We can create energetic public water spaces by utilizing with calm and natural sounds, while some urban noisy sounds like helicopter flying, horn of ferry boats and siren of cap can disturb the expected effect of landscape design. This video shows the contrast between tranquil sound of landscape and repulsive sound of city. Especially, the sounds and scene of the polluted running water with shining reflected sun represents the ironic character of water. The polluted water looks like abstract paintings and beautiful in a way, but the quality of water is actually toxic and hazardous to nature. It means that urban landscapes design should consider not only the physical elements of public space but also the dealing with sounds Because, the new waterfront landscape still seems to be polluted by cruise, helicopters and visitors. One of good example of dealing with sound is the noise insulation hill in Brooklyn Bridge Park. The mound can not only provide green space but also protect traffic noise from highway. We should think about creating public and community landscapes and filtration of sound simultaneously.

i like how the sounds are being taped, There are so nice and sentimental. In a big a city like New York, take a moment for listening to water, ducks, trees is valuable.

Although both of us is making the focus on sound clips, I like yours better. The different type of sound clips with the video is presenting me the different environmental conditions. The theme is clear and the transition between each video is smooth, great job!

you have a good eye for framing shots, and demonstrate great restraint in not trying to load your film with too many special effects. well done. the focus on sound is a good one, and the juxtaposition of sound clips with moving images can be very effective: the police siren heard over the still water pool at lincoln center is perhaps the best moment in the film. however, at other moments these juxtapositions are not as effective: the sound of helicopter taking off while we're looking at ducks in gantry state park seems out of character, especially since the next scene focuses on the very same helicopter taking off. what i do like about the duck and helicopter scenes is that in both cases the moving elements occupy a very small portion of the screen (the ducks and helicopter are about the same size in each scene), but the amount of noise made by the helicopter is far greater.

I think you got a very special theme and this video is successful on soundtrack. Different soundtracks shows very clear in this video. And it makes me feel like the reason you often use fixed shoot is to emphasis the soundtrack in that surroundings instead of being distracted away. However, I think maybe you could do a better work on the order and shows us more clear.

I liked the idea of this video but would have also liked to see more landscapes and less water. Though your idea is very well done and creates an appreciation for the two different types of sites. Your theme is also presented very clearly because of the simplistic way you presented each site in your video and the sound that was being juxtaposed.
Maybe more context with your video about what kinds of site or sound will be shown would have added to the movie feel.

what a moving and elegant film you made! It can make me enjoy the sound and bring me back to the moment that I still there. Especially, I like the shot that yellow boat going through the screen. It is so comfortable with view and sound.

Your attention to detail really shines through to your theme that focuses on sound. It is evident you put a lot of thought into your idea. My favorite part, and perhaps the most effective scene was the scene where the helicopters and cars were moving around but the sound was birds chirping and rustling of leaves. Very interesting idea overall.

I like the period from 1:42~2:53, the fixed shot make us focus on what is happening on the sea, nice! Also I am interesting the relationship between the helicopter and the yellow boat that they seem to race each other no matter the speed or the sound. However, I think some of the cuts or order doesn't related to others well. I am not sure but maybe you can try just focus on the boat move back and forth on the sea, perhaps it could generate some unpredictable and interesting results.

Its nice to see that you put thought into this film while on the trip. The opening description really helped to give the audience a sense of what they are about to watch, and that is always helpful. The sounds you captured were great! nice work
